Improved therapeutics and prevention
Research only benefits patients if it can be brought from the laboratory to them. Translational research aims to "translate" findings in basic research into medical application. Clinical research goes a step further and works directly with patients. Some projects use the knowledge and expertise acquired through the basic research to develop new drugs or therapies. Others combine research and evaluation with the participation of patients or people judged to be at risk from disease.
